Genre Research: Stranger Things

 Hi blog!

The film, Stranger Things, is our main inspiration for our final task. This film is about a group of friends in the late 90’s that find supernatural creatures and a girl with powers. They have to save different characters along the way and discover who released the monsters. We want to create an opening sequence of a group of teenagers finding something that leads them to playing detective. We think that even though the film is more science fiction based with a thriller side, it's a good film that has mystery genre aspects. We chose suspense and friendship to be a part of our project because Stranger Things uses those elements in a very beneficial way that connects with their audience. Suspense is very commonly used in mystery films because it makes the audience think about all the previous scenes and how they all connect and make sense of the antagonist. A strong friendship is also included in a lot of films. Usually in mystery or horror because the storyline tries to break up the friend group and can lead to them splitting up and getting in more danger. The main elements of this film are supernatural events, relatable and comical dialogue, and the changes of battles: people vs people, people vs society, and people vs nature. The characters use funny phrases and comebacks towards other characters that relate to the year of the setting. These are all used in Stranger Things and it strengthened the bond between the characters. I really like how these elements add to the personality of the film and I would want to see other films using the same methods. Some elements I didn’t like were how overly dramatic it was portrayed. The emotions shown by each character was sometimes obvious to how they wanted the audience to know how they felt. Our group feels that it made the scene feel fake in certain clips, but overall, it was very well thought out and effective to the audience. This film inspired our group to want to base our project about a group of teenagers that are close friends. They go through a journey that questions their bonds and decisions. Stranger Things will have a completely different storyline than our project, but with similar qualities, like humor, friendship, and mystery.
