Short film research: Mahalia Melts in the Rain/Drama
This short film is by two people: Carmine Pierre-Dufour & Émilie Mannering. It is about Mahalia, a 9 year old girl. She feels different from all the other girls in her ballet class. She wants to boost her confidence. In order to do so, her mom brings her to a hair salon. With the sole intent of getting her hair straightened for the very first time. The beginning of the movie starts off with piano music playing in the background, and the teacher counting 1,2,3, etc. The camera pans as it goes through all the ballet dancers. Following them, and then cutting to Mahalia, sitting by herself with her mom. It has a close-up of her face as she is talking to two of the little girls. You can see the sadness in her eyes as they talk to her. It stands still for the most part throughout the movie. It jumps cuts from the ballet studio, to her standing outside all alone. She is now not only wearing a ballet outfit, but a pink coat too, with her hair in a bun. There is a reverse cut between her mom and her talking about the hair salon. You can see the smile on her face, as well as her moms. It then jumps cuts sto her sitting in the salon chair with the cape around her. There is an overhead shot of her laying in the tub getting her hair rinsed. It then zooms in on her laying there, breathing heavily, waiting. Jump cuts to her with her hair in the dryer. There is an eye-shot. Where you see what she is looking at, and focused on. This wasn’t my favorite. It was kind of boring, and not the happiest movie. This is not what we want ours to look like. So we are not going to film like this.
