Short film research: Are you still there? By Rayka Zehtabchi & Sam Davis/Drama

Image
The short film starts off with a girl in her car singing a song. It goes on for about a minute. She gets to a location outside of a gas station and gets out of her car after turning it off. The title shows and the music fades out. It shows a focus on the steering wheel, with the background blurred. It shows people going in and out to make the time seem like it's going back longer than it actually is. When the girl comes back, the camera shows a close up of her jets going into the ignition. She tries turning her car on but it won’t work. A lady bangs on her window, yelling at her in Chinese and it shows a two-person shot of them screaming back and forth. She calls her mom, but you only see one side of the conversation, however you hear both, so there is a non diegetic sound. There is an overhead shot to show the location. There is also a jump cut when they show her car battery not turning on. The actor calls triple A, but at the word of her dad silence starts. Makes it seem like h...

Short Film Research: Pregnant Pause by Alice Seabright/ Drama

Image
I researched for drama short films on Short of the week. I found all four on this same website. The first I selected was a 13 minute movie about a girl whose boyfriend at the time gets her possibly pregnant. However, she doesn't have kids, but her boyfriend does. He makes her not wanting kids a deal breaker, so she leaves the apartment. Throughout this movie there were certain things that stood out. This includes: At the beginning, to give reality to the film, they include peeing sounds as she is sitting on the toilet taking the test. To make it more realistic as well, they include her heavily breathing as she is taking the pregnancy test, like most do in this same situation. Her outfit consists of pjs which makes it seem like it wasn’t planned. The setting includes a bedroom, bathroom, street, etc. During the conversation with her boyfriend just before she leaves, there are many two shots, and reverse shots during their conversation. Doing this allows the audience to see who is ...

Short film research: Mahalia Melts in the Rain/Drama

Image
This short film is by two people: Carmine Pierre-Dufour & Émilie Mannering. It is about Mahalia, a 9 year old girl. She feels different from all the other girls in her ballet class. She wants to boost her confidence. In order to do so, her mom brings her to a hair salon. With the sole intent of getting her hair straightened for the very first time. The beginning of the movie starts off with piano music playing in the background, and the teacher counting 1,2,3, etc. The camera pans as it goes through all the ballet dancers. Following them, and then cutting to Mahalia, sitting by herself with her mom. It has a close-up of her face as she is talking to two of the little girls. You can see the sadness in her eyes as they talk to her. It stands still for the most part throughout the movie. It jumps cuts from the ballet studio, to her standing outside all alone. She is now not only wearing a ballet outfit, but a pink coat too, with her hair in a bun. There is a reverse cut between ...

Comparing Le Jetee, the short, and 12 Monkeys, the full-length movie

Image
Part 1- The main takeaway from the video is what goes into a film to develop it into a good production. It takes editing and filming to allow the audience to fully understand the story. The video infers what the film took to make and how to portray what is happening or meant to happen in the film. The editing is important in the film. The pictures put in allow a clean effect for shots. The shot and reverse shots allow us to feel the film. Long shots allow the audience to explore the film better. Giving the audience more time to study the images. The images are each their one story. This gives ideas for our film on how we can better represent situations and emotions in the film. Going back in time in films can get complicated but this film portrays it very simply so the audience is understanding everything. Audio can also accentuate the picture according to the video. 12 monkeys set up a mystery. This gathers the audience's interest in the film. Towards the end the film becomes fast...

Short film research- Suburbia/drama

Image
This short film includes sound, mise-en-scene, and editing that will relate to our film as well. The first thing is the diegetic sound. This is used in drama films to convey the emotions of the film. In this film the sound is used to show the suspense and the frighten he is feeling. There is also a non-diegetic sound used to show the surrounding emotions of the film. The film uses baby sounds from a distance to make the audience uncomfortable. Then there are gunshots and people running to also add an uncomfortable emotion to the film. The mise-en-scene used in the film is from the costumes in the film. The man is wearing regular street clothes and the girl is also wearing regular clothes. All of the characters wear what they are playing, so it represents their characters. This is mostly used in drama to show the true ways the characters in dramas behave and respond to emotions in their regular lives and clothes. Common editing in drama that was used in the film was continuous edi...

Research: How to make a short film

Image
The video goes through what it takes to make a short film. The takeaway is to get creative. Make only what you can pull off. This is important because we will not have the money or steup to make some details we might want to add. So we will have to only write what we can accomplish. Creating a setup and payoff we create interest for the audience. Between relationships or things it is important to set up and pay off. Do what your audience will not expect. This will help us create a more unpredictable film. Wherever comes to our mind first may come to the audience's mind first as well so we have to do something else. Geer is something we may not have much access to but that will not limit us. We will have to make everything towards what we can use to film. Create a vivid story board and filming plan, but we may not have to stick to that. We can go off the plans if things do not go as expected while filming. With the limited sources we may have we will not be completing exactly what...

Comparing 9, the short, and 9, the full-length movie

Image
We started off first with watching the short film,9. It was only about 10 minutes long and there was no dialogue during it. When I first watched the film, I thought that there would be some dialogue. Doing, or having would increase the quality of this short film greatly. Not only would it make it better, but easier to understand what the plot is. There were many times throughout this short film where I didn't know what was happening. I didn't know what was going on or the plot throughout the whole film. It was hard to follow without any dialogue.I  had to resort to watching the characters' body language in order to understand what was happening. Maybe the little noises the characters made for each emotion would have been better. But that isn't very easy when they're little rag dolls. If it had this dialogue it would be easier to understand, but they would also be able to add lots more. Dialogue is a major contribution in films. Without it, they can almost seem pla...

Choosing our genre

Image
Its done! Both my partner and I researched the three genres. Repeating: Romance, Drama, and Suspense. Now, like we said before, our short movie could fit into any of these and still be a success. This is all due to the storyline of our movie, and the obstacles within it. At first, before the researching process was started, we were just thinking in general. We picked these three genres off the top of our head, and then both of us thought our movie would most likely go into the romance genre. This is where we proved ourselves wrong.  A couple days later.... Our genre research was finished. We in fact were wrong. Our movie may have romance in it, but that's not all it is. Our movie is Drama!!! Drama consists of, External Conflict with another character, Internal Conflict that only the audience sees, Tension, Anxiety, and Suspense in many Scenes. For example, The hate you give. This movie has romance in it, and it's a big part of the movie, but there are other aspects to it. Th...

Three Genres For Short Film

Image
We chose three different genres that our short movie could fit into. The genres are: Romance, Suspense, and Drama. We chose these three because our movie could go into any of these easily without having to change anything. Our story has romance. It's one of the major plots and backstory behind our movie. Our movie has drama. That's because it has internal conflict, which only the audience sees throughout the movie. Lastly, suspense. The asteroid that is supposed to come gives the audience suspense throughout the whole thing about what's going to happen. Making sure to keep them on the edge of their seat until the end. Our movie could go into any one of these, and would fit it to the T. However, we need to do more research to see which was the perfect fit. As well as where our movie would strive the best in. Asd of right now, before any research, we have some sort of idea where our movie could land. We are thinking that it is most likely going to land in the Romance genre....

Suspense:      In suspense the camera movements are very important. Tilt is a very important camera movement in suspense. It shows the emotions in the film, by creating a questioning emotion through the screen. This allows the audience to feel the suspense from the film and the characters. Another camera movement used in a suspense film is zooming in. This shows the emotions of a character, which can create suspense for the viewer. Lighting is also important in a suspense film. Low-key lighting creates a dark tone that may make the audience concerned of what may happen. Camera angles often used in suspense are over the shoulder and close up shots. The over the shoulder angle creates a tension in the film, it makes the audience aware of what is happening to both characters. This will increase the suspense of the film for the audience. Close up shows all of the emotions the characters are feeling which may make the audience more concerned for what may happen. The elements o...

Drama :     - Camera Movements Panning: This is used to show the characters and their surroundings especially in rising action or the climax when tension is high especially in a drama.  Tracking: This is used to add suspense and a tension      - Lighting Low-Key Lighting is used to build tension between characters which is a needed trade in dramas where there is usually a conflict between two or more characters.  Camera Angles High Shot Angles are used to demonstrate the lack of power in characters usually in a conflict.  Low Shot Angles are used to demonstrate the power a character or group of characters have in the situation.     - Elements of Drama External Conflict with another character Internal Conflict that only the audience sees  Tension, Anxiety, and Suspense in many Scenes      - Sounds Non-Diegetic: This ...

It's Pitch Time

Image
Karli Norkin 10/4/2021 Pitch #1: Fairy tail swap T hink of the movie sleeping beauty, but gender roles are swapped. The evil queen curses the man, and the young, beautiful girl comes to save the day.  This pitch was the first one to come into our minds that we thought was a decent idea. We got the inspiration from scrolling on Tik Tok and seeing a video about romance, and realized that would make a really good short film. However, finding the people that would want to participate in this would be very hard to do.  Pitch #2: One day, and my whole life ahead.  The world is ending, lives are falling apart. There is an asteroid coming to Earth. This girl has one day to live, one day to do everything she has ever wanted to do before she dies.  This is an interesting idea that we don't think has ever been done before at our school. It's original and stands out. It will be different than the other ideas. It will also be fun to film, and we can incorporate our filming tools....
