Title Research: Number 23

Image
This film was from the website, www.watchthetitles.com . The opening sequence is well put together. There are titles of the people who made the film, but also hints about what is to come in the film. There are sentences about secrets. There is also the number 23 everywhere. The number is in every image. The images contain the number 23 all over them and it is written in ink that was typed on a typewriter. There is also blood being splattered on the paper. The blood spreads throughout the paper as the image stays there. Throughout the sequence there is more and more blood, until it covers the whole thing. The images connotations are to show how the number 23 is recurring and comes up a lot. Each image has the number on it to show that idea. The images make the viewer suspenseful and a little uncomfortable. The genre is shown through the way the sequence commences. It starts with just the writing and as it goes on it get more confusing and mysterious. There is no blood until the red let...

The viewer sees the people around the buildings and fences trying to get in. The people are in a situation which makes the people wonder if the person stuck will be ok. Each image shows fear and concern as the people try to get in to help. The shadows used also adds a sense of success. The genre is established by the mystery of whether the person will get out or not. There is also music over the sequence that makes people feel the suspense that is to come in the movie. The film uses the music, guns, and ...

Title Research: Psycho

Image
This film is from the website www.artofthetitle.com . The titles displayed throughout the opening sequence were all of the makers and providers of the movie. There are lines on the screen, and they bring the titles in and out. The titles are all of names and they represent the people who helped make the film. At the beginning there is also a title of the name of the movie. These images prioritize the people of the film who helped make it. The images make the viewer interested in what is to come in the movie. The lines sliding up and down and side makes the viewer see the change in the way the movies may be. It shows the change in how the plot may go and how there will be things going on that will not remain the same, or things will be crazy and all over the place. The genre is shown by the upbeat tempo of the music and the screen moving in all directions. There is an unsettling feeling when watching this opening sequence. The feeling is a what is to come type. The viewer is not ...

Title Research: Catch Me if You Can

Image
This film is from the website www.artofthetitle.com . The titles displayed are the names of the producers, actors, and much more. The titles are all of the people who helped make the movie. They pop up and then slowly go away as the lines fade. The images are of an animated man in a suit. There are sometimes multiple men being shown with briefcases in their hands. There are lines going up the screen that then turn into the words and names of the people. There are also some women all on the way to work.  These images show how society works and can leave people out and not let them in. Title Research: Watch the Titles Website

Image
Once again, I didn’t think I was going to find an interest in this website. After reading the designer stories, I thought of how cool of a job that is. Although it is very difficult, seeing the finished product of title art must be so rewarding and exciting. I learned that the people working on each project have to look through the consumers eyes. What would be appealing to them? Many films get inspiration from comic books or old, classic movies. That’s why many get compared to them and you can even see the parallel lines between them. When a person in charge is unsure about the plot or script, they run test shows to see if it will look and sound good. They can make up to 40 test images to show how a scene should look. If they don’t like it, then they can either change certain elements, or even scrap the whole project!

Title Research: Art of the Title Website

Image
When I began researching this website, I thought I would find it boring. How much could I really learn about movie titles? I actually found it very interesting, especially the title sequences/art. I learned that by watching the movie, the artists decide what color scheme would best represent the feeling and energy the movie gives off. For example, a seemingly bright and fun movie would include neon's and light colors. However, if the movie had a plot twist such as a main character turning evil, the patterns of the colors might represent this. Lots of crazy twists and shapes that basically turn into a mess would represent their mind going from a simple happy place to a twisted maze. For scary movies, the art would probably be dark, with a simple font for the title and lots of shadows. This gets the audience intrigued because they want to know the secrets and mysteries that the film holds. Now, looking at movie posters I can better tell how the movie is going to go. The title sequ...

Genre Research: Enola Holmes

Image
Hi blog! Enola Holmes is a movie based on the sister of Sherlock Holmes who is looking for her missing mother. She meets another character and they become friends and help each other get away from dangerous situations. We decided to use this example because it involves a mostly nonviolent form of a mystery film. The mother leaves clues for Enola that only she would understand. This led to her leaving home and traveling on a train towards her mother. She not only ends up finding her mother, but she also beats her brother. She becomes a witness in another crime and finds the criminal before her brother. This element of an extra storyline surprised us and the audience's predictions. The elements in common mystery genres are similar to this film because they both included films, antagonists, and music/sound effects that add a suspenseful and comical tone. I like how this film is filmed because it has scenes that are very unique and have important messages. In Enola Holmes , the moth...

Genre Research: Stranger Things

Image
Hi blog! The film, Stranger Things , is our main inspiration for our final task. This film is about a group of friends in the late 90’s that find supernatural creatures and a girl with powers. They have to save different characters along the way and discover who released the monsters. We want to create an opening sequence of a group of teenagers finding something that leads them to playing detective. We think that even though the film is more science fiction based with a thriller side, it's a good film that has mystery genre aspects. We chose suspense and friendship to be a part of our project because Stranger Things uses those elements in a very beneficial way that connects with their audience. Suspense is very commonly used in mystery films because it makes the audience think about all the previous scenes and how they all connect and make sense of the antagonist. A strong friendship is also included in a lot of films. Usually in mystery or horror because the storyline tries to ...

Genre Decision Blog

Image
When coming up with our pitches, we had some ideas of what aspects of certain genres we wanted to include. Suspenseful music, cliff-hangers, puzzles/problem solving. Once our three pitches were created we knew that they were thrilling, horror, and mysterious. They could kind of drift between each of those genres. We chose our finalist, where a young toddler goes missing in a small town. A group of teenagers stumble across the hair bow she is wearing in her missing poster. This inspires them to help solve the case and bring the little one back home safely. After deciding on this, we were still unsure about which genre it would fall into. We thought about similar shows and films to our project. Stranger things , Outer Banks , and Riverdale were all shows that we had in mind when coming up with ideas. Still, these shows flowed between mystery and horror. We knew we had to research each genre more carefully and see which one had more elements that we wanted to take from it. We knew for ...

Genre: Comedy and Action

Comedy: Comedy is one of our favorite genres to watch because it is always so entertaining if done correctly. A popular lighting example is 3-point lighting since it is used as a spotlight when the camera is focusing on one person. High angle shots are used to look over/on top of someone often when they are laying on the floor. The person is probably the punchline of a joke. The Mise-en-Scene is often used to portray stereotypes in comedy movies. The genre includes many elements such as exaggeration, surprise, sarcasm, and repetition. These can usually be seen in many other genres too, because most films usually have at least one punchline. We know that if we were making a full movie, we would want to include a joke in it. We may try to include one in our opening sequence as well. Tying in some comde elements are important in creating an interesting and engaging production.  Action: Action movies are usually fast-paced and suspenseful. They keep their audiences on the edge o...

Genre Research: Horror

Hi blog! For my first project in this class, I created a presentation of the different characteristics from a selected genre. I chose horror because it has interesting ways of scaring the audience with logical camera movements. In the project, I went in-depth on the camera shots, angles and movements, editing techniques, sound, and Mise-En-Scene used for horror films. First, I gave examples of the common types of lighting used in those types of films. I mentioned up-lighting, silhouette, spotlighting, underexposure, and shadows. I found examples from horror movies like The Nun and Psycho. Then I found examples of camera angles like high angles, low angles, close-up, point of view, and an over-the-shoulder shot. The next category I covered was common camera movements. Hand-held, track, pan, tilt, and Steadicam are all movements that are commonly included in a horror film. Mise-En-Scene is another category that was a part of my project. It is based on the props, costumes, and setti...

Genre Research: Murder Mystery

Image
Hi blog! My group and I have decided to continue our project in the mystery genre. The movie Murder Mystery is about a couple who goes on vacation in Europe is being framed for the murder of a millionaire. They have to act as the detectives and find the real killer. This movie contains similar elements that most mystery films have. This movie contained suspenseful music and a lot of fast-paced cutting. The frequent use of crosscutting makes the audience predict what will happen as soon as the cutting stops.  Some of the elements in mystery films are as simple as a crime and a villain. The villain always gets caught at the end, which could have a negative effect on the audience.  Most mystery genre films have the same ending. There is always a hero that solves the mystery. In this movie, the couple discovers that the killer was the character that helped them all along. There are foreshadowing and a set of clues that are eventually pieced together at the end. It is common...

Our Pitch

Image
For our film, we decided we want to do a mystery sort of theme. It is inspired by the films: Stranger Things and IT.  One of our pitches takes place in a small town, where a little girl goes missing. One character drives by a missing sign for a little girl. A group of teenagers accidentally find her hair bow while hanging out in a field. That is where they decide that they are going to find her and bring her home safely. The ending of the opening sequence would lead right up to them discovering the bow, and then leave the audience would be left on a cliffhanger.  For the second pitch, we thought it would take place at the beach. A group of friends are hanging out at the beach. They are playing volleyball when a bad pass takes the ball towards a pile of weeds. One friend goes to receive it when a suspicious stranger asks her for directions. She points them the right way and turns to go back to her friends as they continue the conversation. She begins to get worried and ...

Starting the Final Task

Image
I am Karli Norkin, and I am in 10 th grade, at Fort Lauderdale High School. I enjoy filming and editing videos and that is why I decided to take media studies. I do my work on time and I try to not procrastinate. I have done my other two projects alone. This project I am doing with a group. I am excited to share ideas and hear other ways of filming and editing that I might not have thought of. I am working with two people, Ashlyn Young and Abby Koppel. They are in a different class as me, but we will work well together. I chose to work with them because I have known them for a long time, and I know they will stay on top of their work. We all had the same idea for what we wanted to make the video about, that is why we thought we would do well together. We all agree on a lot of ideas when it comes to ways of filming and location of the film. We also agreed on what the film should be about, and how to get the story across to the viewer. All three of us are hard working and we try o...
